No Stone Will Tell from Rounders by The Bad Popes

About five or six months after my father passed away in 2010, I had a dream that I was riding a bicycle by the sea. My father was riding along with me. When we reached a certain place along the coastline, I decided, for some obscure reason, that I would rappell down a cliff overlooking the sea, my father would man the ropes. I don't remember what happened in the time that I was hanging over the cliffs of the sea, nor how I got back up on the top of the cliffs, but I do remember the strange feeling of looking around after I got back up on mainland, and my father wasn't there, how transformed the landscape was, how different my pulse was. I remember getting back on the bike and pedaling, pedaling . . .

I wrote this crazy song after this dream. I love and miss my father. This song is about his ghost that is with me now and always.

Appearances on Stories of the Upstate Podcast

I've recently had the pleasure of participating in a couple of podcasts on the website Loyd Ford's program Stories Of The Upstate™ features interviews with artists, musicians, politicians, philanthropists, educators, and interesting folks from all walks of life.

I was honored to be one of the participants in his first ever music concert edition of the program, called The Downtown Jam™. Doug Jones, Charles Hedgepath, and I play a few songs each, and we talk about the songwriting process and how our songs came about. You can find that show by clicking the first link below.

The second link is a special Christmas edition of the podcast featuring Darby Wilcox, Kelly Jo, Marvin King, Charles Hedgepath and me sharing memories of holiday seasons past and present. We each play Christmas tunes, both tradional and original. It was a lot of fun to play my New Year's Eve song "This Year We're Gonna Be In Luck" with this cast of fellow travelers. Talented folks!

Best wishes to all in 2016!

Featured on the new Bad Popes recording Rounders, Knuckleball is a mythologized account of my memories of my grandfather, William Manning Rhodes, who, among other things, was a baseball pitcher in the textile leagues. He pitched for the Union Bleachery in Greenville. He also played guitar, ukele, and harp. He taught me my first Hank Williams song when I was eleven years old. Check out the tune here on the Music page on this site, or on the pop-up player. Also, check out for more songs from Rounders!

Jef Chandler Band in 2001 (picture by Brandon Leard)

March 20 is the vernal equinox, the first day of spring, and only two days removed from my birthday. To celebrate I've invited friends that I have played in bands with over the past 21 years to come out to Gottrocks in Greenville, and we're gonna have a big old jam. Bands featured this evening will be Big Brown Bowl, Dog Whistle, The Bad Popes, Smash The Radio, The Lackies, and the Jef Chandler Band. Performers include Scott Allen, Mark Dye, Charles Hedgepath, Jeff Holland, Chris Garrett, Derek Bridges, Matthew Smith, David Sims, Kevin Heuer, Mike Bagwell, Joe Cash, Matt Morgan, Brandon Leard, John Martin, Stan Halbkat, Lee Holroyd and more. I've really been blessed to play with these and many other very talented musicians and good friends over the years and I look forward jamming with them on March 20. Admission is $7 at the door and the show begins at 8:30pm.

Wendy was the First

Wendy, my latest single on my website is actually a song that came out on the 2009 release entitled The Bad Popes. We're all playing acoustic, how bout that? That's Kevin Heuer laying down the drums. Mike Bagwell is playing dobro, Charles Hedgepath is doing double duty of guitar and mandolin, Chris Garrett is laying down the stand up bass, and I'm strumming and singing. Check out the ode to my first car, a gray 81' Mercury hatchback I called Wendy.
